PROBLEM statement
Walmart’s goal to achieve zero waste by 2025 is hindered by a critical behavioral gap: consumers intend to recycle but often don’t follow through. Confusing labels, lack of timely prompts, and disconnected customer touchpoints result in low recycling engagement, with over 500 million plastic packages wasted annually. Existing recycling programs fail to leverage digital infrastructure to nudge consumers toward sustainable action in real time—turning recycling from a conscious intent into an overlooked afterthought.

solution
Recycle+ addresses this behavior gap through targeted digital nudges embedded directly within Walmart’s app ecosystem. Using behavioral science principles like timely prompts, reward reminders, and seamless in-app actions, Recycle+ guides consumers toward a buy-to-recycle mindset. By integrating recycling notifications into the shopping flow—cart, checkout, and post-purchase—Recycle+ transforms recycling from a separate chore into a default, rewarding habit. This approach drives measurable behavior change, reduces waste, and moves Walmart closer to its circular economy goals.
