PROBLEM statement
PROBLEM statement
Every year, millions of tons of electronic waste are discarded globally, with only a fraction being recycled. Yet within this waste lie valuable resources—precious metals like gold, silver, and copper, hidden inside circuit boards and electronic components.
Meanwhile, the mining industry continues its destructive cycle:
Mining operations disrupt ecosystems, pollute waterways, and release harmful chemicals into the air.
According to research, mining 1 tonne of gold emits 16.3 tonnes of CO₂—already a significant environmental cost.
But the alternative—recycling—is worse: recycling 1 tonne of gold from e-waste emits 2000 tonnes of CO₂, due to energy-intensive industrial processes.
As both mining and recycling compound climate change and biodiversity loss, we’re left asking: Is there a better way?
